Scrabble Go Romance Scam: Romance Scammers Play Scrabble Go to Find More Victims

When playing Scrabble Go, you don’t expect to be paired up with a scammer matching words on a virtual game board. However, a suspected scammer comes up on your chat board and starts trying to spike up a random conversation! They usually try and be your friend, then form a romantic relationship with you to gain your trust faster. Here we talk about what a romance scam is, how to spot one, and how to avoid one before it’s too late!

Is Scrabble GO a Dating Site?

No, Scrabble GO is not a dating site. Scrabble GO is a mobile game app where players can challenge their friends or other players around the world to play Scrabble. The app is designed for people who enjoy playing word games, not for dating or romantic purposes.

Scrabble Go Romance Scam

A scammer tries to get to know you on the Scrabble Go game, stating that you are beautiful and they would like to be your friend. Flattered by the compliment, you accept their request and add them to a secondary messaging app. They start flirting with you and eventually build a romantic relationship with you so that you can start to trust them faster.

Recent reports reveal that scammers are increasingly using Scrabble Go to target victims through the in-game chat feature. They initiate friendly conversations, build trust, and eventually move the interaction to private messaging apps like WhatsApp, where they attempt to manipulate victims into sending money.

In response, Scrabble Go has introduced mute and block functions and a ‘mute public chat’ setting, allowing users to limit messages to known contacts. However, scammers continue to exploit unsuspecting players, with cases like an 83-year-old woman losing over $20,000 to a fraudster posing as a wealthy individual.

To stay safe:

  • Never share personal information with strangers in online games.
  • Use privacy settings to control who can contact you.
  • Be skeptical of unsolicited messages and sudden romantic advances.
  • Report suspicious activity to the game’s support team.

By staying aware and cautious, players can enjoy Scrabble Go while avoiding these deceptive scams.

Once they spent months talking to you every day, they start asking for money because of some life or job emergency. You feel bad and agree to give them money, but then realize that they keep requesting more money from you! They eventually drain your bank account and then block you off of everything once they realize you can no longer give them money. Sometimes, they even take every single bit of information you told them to commit identity theft!

Signs of a Scrabble Go Romance Scam

  • Someone wants to be your friend really quickly. If someone is asking to be your friend after one game of Scrabble Go, this is usually a sign that they don’t have the best intentions and are a romance scammer.
  • They want to build a romantic relationship with you right away. If they are wanting to date you within only a day of knowing you, then that is when you need to be wary that they aren’t telling the truth about their identity.
  • They are overly flirty. This is to flatter you into trusting them faster so that they can ask for money as soon as possible.
  • They never want to video chat with you or meet you in person. This is because the pictures that they send to you aren’t really of them. They stole those pictures from someone else and are only pretending to be that person.
  • They want to message you on a secondary app. This is usually because they don’t want you to report them on the Scrabble Go app so that they can scam more victims. Sometimes, they even want to go as far as sending you phishing links which can give your devices malware.
  • They consistently ask for money. No one online should be asking you for money, and if they are then they are definitely a romance scammer.
