Unbeknownst to her, the charming military general she believed she had fallen for turned out to be a skilled scammer operating from Syria. As we delve into Helen’s heartbreaking story, we uncover the intricacies of the scam, the emotional toll it took on her, and her determination to raise awareness about romance scams. Join us as we shed light on the dark side of online relationships and the importance of vigilance in the digital age.
What Happened?

Helen’s journey began innocently enough when she received a message from a person claiming to be General James H. Dickinson, the head of the US Command Center. Little did she know that this initial interaction would lead her down a treacherous path of deceit and manipulation. The two struck up a romantic relationship, with the supposed general even going as far as sending her an engagement ring, fueling Helen’s belief in their connection.
As their bond grew stronger, General Dickinson shared harrowing tales of his military service in Syria. He painted a vivid picture of danger and heroism, tugging at Helen’s heartstrings. Trusting in their blossoming relationship, Helen was persuaded to assist in a mission of great importance – the transportation of a portfolio containing a substantial sum of money from Syria to the United States.
However, before the portfolio could reach Helen’s hands, she was informed of an unexpected hurdle: a tariff that needed to be paid at US Customs. Suspicions began to arise, and Helen started questioning the authenticity of the situation. She made the decision not to personally receive the portfolio, realizing that she might have fallen victim to a scam. It was a moment of clarity, but the damage had already been done.

Driven by her desire to help and the belief that her assistance was crucial, Helen had loaned the individual who claimed to be General Dickinson a staggering $72,050. Devastatingly, it became clear that the money was never used for its intended purpose. Instead, it had vanished into the pockets of a remorseless scammer who had preyed upon Helen’s trust and vulnerability.
Refusing to remain silent, Helen took action. She filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and local authorities, seeking justice and an investigation into the whereabouts of the real General James H. Dickinson. Determined to prevent others from experiencing the same fate, Helen planned to share her story through a book and her YouTube channel, aiming to raise awareness about the prevalence of romance scams and the devastating impact they can have.
Through her painful experience, Helen became a symbol of resilience and courage. She transformed her trauma into a catalyst for change, advocating for greater vigilance and skepticism when engaging in online relationships. She emphasized the importance of verifying identities and exercising caution before sharing personal information or sending money to individuals met online.
Helen’s story serves as a stark reminder that the digital landscape can be a breeding ground for deception. It highlights the need for increased awareness and education surrounding the tactics used by scammers, especially in the realm of romance. By shedding light on her own ordeal, Helen hopes to empower others to stay vigilant, protect their hearts, and avoid falling victim to the devastating consequences of online scams.
