The Words with Friends app often sees scams, specifically scams done by romance scammers. Words with friends are often linked to Facebook pages. Romance scammers may have a very glamorous profile picture, sometimes with a very low follower count.

A legitimate Words with Friends player is interested in finishing the games they play. Words with Friends scammers are not interested in the actual word game. Rather, they’re interested in chatting with you. If a person chats with you and suggests messaging outside of the app, this may indicate they’re a romance scammer. Some romance scammers suggest using Google Hangouts.

Spotting a Words with Friends Scammer

Many scammers start the chat with you by starting with a compliment or overly-nice greeting. If you receive a chat like this, it’s likely to be unrelated to anything going on in the game. The romance scammer attempts to start a conversation with you, hoping you’ll respond.

Other signs you may be speaking with a scammer include:

  • Asking for personal details or asking too many personal questions
  • Noticing weird or off things in their gaming profile
  • Unreal profile picture or no profile picture
  • Inconsistencies in their story and location
  • Gives you a sad sob story to pull on your heartstrings
  • The profile has been created very recently
  • Asking to move to another platform to talk
