#5 Busting a Romance Scammer That’s Talked to Her For Seven Years

Jodi met her romance scammer back in 2014 after swiping through matches on Match.com. She was completely in love with him and thought that nothing was going wrong. He would ask for financial help here and there, but it wasn’t anything major so she would never question it. Then one day, she was watching Dr. Phil and started seeing episodes where he was catching a bunch of catfish. That’s when she started questioning whether Collin was a real person or just another catfish.

He would ask for $30 here and there, then increased the amount of money to $100 whenever he would ask her. He asked for money a few months after they started talking and claimed it was for tickets, medical bills, groceries, documentation, late fees, medical bills for his son, money so his son could live, etc.

She is not sure about the amount of money she has sent him now. For a while, she kept track of how much money she has sent him, but now she is unsure. However, she estimates that it is close to $30,000, which is the money that she received from her disability and social security.

She reached out to Social Catfish for help and we found his true identity as we helped her with busting a romance scam.

#4 The Love Scammer

Story By Reddit User u/blackwoodsix:

I matched with this “UK” guy. He immediately started calling me all sorts of flattering names like sweetie, beautiful, etc which was an immediate red flag to me. So I adopted a wait-and-see attitude. We exchanged email addresses and this dude started writing mushy love letters every day.

On the second day, he declared that he loves me, can’t stop thinking about me, and all sorts of unbelievable messages of devotion. He claimed to be a businessman dealing with precious stones and had a daughter. Told me some sob story about his wife dying early.

Then, of course, he had to go on a business trip and of course, he lost his credit cards. I was waiting for him to ask me for money. Then his “daughter” became very ill and got rushed to the hospital and he asked me for help to transfer about $500 SGD (IIRC) to “the doctor of the hospital”. Huh, why not transfer straight to the hospital or him? The name he gave was a female name.

I told him he should contact the credit card company and even helpfully pasted the link for reporting lost cards on the chat. The dude was very mad and started insulting me. He even told me to go to a bank and tell the bank to help him withdraw money as his “fiancee” I don’t know what he hopes to achieve from this. When did I ever become his fiancee?

And the funny thing is while this whole thing was going on, another scammer contacted me using roughly the same template but different details.

#3 Victim Was Left Homeless Due to Romance Scammer

Social Catfish is here to help a woman named Jeanie from Arizona. She has been dating a man online and wants us to figure out why this man won’t meet her in person. She met James Frank a year ago on Instagram and has fallen in love with his sweet words. However, she is confused since he is consistently asking her for money. He asked for help financially so that he could come home from the Middle East. Because of this, she sent him about $5,000.

Jeanie did everything she could to get this guy home from his deployment. She sent James money for a plane ticket and hotel fees so that he could come and visit her. After this, he claimed he was in jail and needed money to get out of jail. Then another man reached out to her using the same photos as James Frank! She is now living out of hotel rooms so that she can help fund his return home.

#2 The Underaged Scam

Story by Reddit User cwill_23:

(Not me) but a high school buddy I used to hang out with a while ago moved away, and went on tinder a few months ago to check out the local game and see how it was. Matched with a girl on there, and she scheduled to meet up with him. She sent him pictures without my buddy even asking, and when she showed up, her dad followed her in another car and followed her up to the door of my friend’s place.

She comes to the door first, he greets her, and then her dad shows up and confronts him about what was going on. Told him that she was actually 16 and lied about her age on Tinder. He then goes on to say that his wife was an attorney and could press charges against him because of the picture she sent (that he didn’t ask for).

So then my buddy explains his situation and what happened and they both started going through the messages and all, when the dad kinda knows that my friend didn’t do anything wrong, and proceeds to ask him for $150 as a “bribe” to not press charges. Luckily, my buddy’s bank account that he uses for Venmo didn’t have enough in it to complete the transaction.

The dad at this point was pretty much done with it all and said to him that he would call back in a few days to collect the payment or the cops would be there within a week.

Never heard from him again. Girl unmatched on tinder during the conversation between him and the dad and drove off. We’re pretty sure it was a really messed up way to be a scammer.

#1 Husband Leaves Wife For Romance Scammer

Lies. Cheating. And wondering whether her husband will stay or leave her for an adult entertainer. Today we are covering a case unlike any other here at Social Catfish. A man named Stephen has been talking to a porn star online and keeps telling two different tales. He tells everyone that he’s going to leave his wife for her, but then tells his wife he wants to make things work. However, his wife suspects that this porn star is actually a romance scammer.

Tammy reached out to Social Catfish stating that her husband, Stephen, was sending money to another woman claiming to be a porn star named Alix. She suspected that Alix wasn’t being totally honest with Stephen, nor was she really an adult entertainer. Instead, Tammy thought that this person stole Alix’s photos and was catfishing Stephen in a romance scam to steal their money. She has also been heartbroken since Stephen started talking to other women online, and felt forced to have an open relationship just to keep him in her life.

Stephen is obsessed with Alix and is in denial that her profiles could be fake. He listed how he thinks the person he is talking to could be a romance scammer but isn’t coming to terms with the fact that she is actually a scammer. When sitting down with David, he claims that he would leave his wife for Alix yet tells his wife a different story. David tells him that it’s better to be honest with Tammy and needs to decide whether to save his marriage or pursue his relationship with Alix.

In another interview, Stephen claims that he wants to give his marriage with Tammy a chance. When asked what he would do if he met Alix in person, he stated that he would “get it out of his system” and spend a few weeks with Alix. Then, he would go back to Tammy once Alix was tired of Stephen. In a surprise twist, we invited the real Alix to come onto the interview to share her thoughts. She confirmed that she didn’t know who Stephen was and that it was indeed a romance scammer who created fake profiles of her.
