How to Tell If a Romance Scammer Sent You a Photoshopped Driver’s License

At Social Catfish, we have seen many cases where an ID is photoshopped in a romance scam. Many people have come to us for help in determining whether or not a driver’s license sent to them is fake or real. We have studied many fake driver’s licenses and have a few tips on how to tell that it’s a photoshopped driver’s license. In this article, we will examine a few examples of photoshopped driver’s licenses to determine why they are fake then list some tips on how to examine a driver’s license to see if it is fake. I will also provide you with a way to sign up for Social Catfish if you need additional help in examining a driver’s license.

Examples of Fake Driver’s Licenses

These are a few examples of some of the photoshopped driver’s licenses we have seen at Social Catfish. These driver’s licenses were sent to romance scam victims as so-called “proof” that the romance scammer is who they say they are. However, these claims are all lies. Instead, they actually photoshop the person they claim to be on the driver’s license with their fake name so that people believe it’s actually them. Luckily, there are ways to tell that a driver’s license they sent you is fake.

In this episode of Scamfish, a man named Stephen was cheating on his wife named Tammy with a so-called adult actress named Alix. She supposedly sent him a driver’s license to “prove her identity” but it was proven to be fake. In the above photo, you can see that the photo Alix posted on Instagram is the same exact photo used within the driver’s license. In New York, you have to take your photo at the DMV and it is only to be used for your driver’s license photo. This confirms that the driver’s license shown above is photoshopped.

Along with this, if you look closely at the license you can see that there are no symbols in the fake ID compared to the real ID in the demonstration. You can also see that the watermark is off in the fake ID compared to the real ID. Alix also confirmed that her birthday was wrong in the fake ID.

Jeremys-Drivers-Licence--scaled

In this episode of Scamfish, a romance scammer claimed that he was looking for a business partner and tricked a woman named Patty into sending thousands of dollars worth of Bitcoin. He sent her a license to prove he was who he said he was, even though it was fake. There were many clues that led us to the conclusion that Jeremy’s driver’s license was fake. First, we took a look at the birthday that was presented on the driver’s license and saw that the format on Jeremy’s license did not match the example of a real South Wales, Australia driver’s license.

Second, we took a look at the image and noticed it was photoshopped onto the license since it doesn’t blend into the license. We also noticed that the license was a lot darker than pictured in the example and the signature doesn’t match the name “Jeremy.”

Joses-Drivers-License-scaled

This passport was from the episode of Scamfish where we talked to Nancy and Vea about their experiences dealing with romance scammers who stole Jose’s images. One of them was sent this passport so that this man could supposedly verify his identity.

However, you can tell it is fake from the blurry background compared to the photo that was inserted into the passport. Plus, the passport is black and white with no identifying symbols to prove that it’s a legit passport. Along with this, when we ran a reverse image search on this man’s photo and found out his real identity.

How to Tell That a Driver’s License Sent to You is Photoshopped

The first thing you should do is Google an example of a real state or country license that you received. Once you have an example driver’s license, you should compare it to the driver’s license you received to see if you can spot any differences.

Watch out for these signs:

  • Compare the symbols and coloring on the two driver’s licenses to see if anything is out of place.
  • Make sure the text formatting and colors match the sample of the official license.
  • Compare the signature to the name on the driver’s license to see if it matches.
  • If it duplicates a name or a birthday on the driver’s license, check to make sure it matches up.
  • If the picture was taken outside of a DMV office, then it’s most likely a fake license.
  • Make sure the state or country listed on the license is an actual state or country instead of a city.

And Lastly… Run a Reverse Image Search with Social Catfish

At Social Catfish, we want to help you verify the identities of those who might seem suspicious to you. If you have their name, email address, phone number, social media username, or image, you can reverse search and see who the suspected person was that you’ve been in contact with after reading these signs of a fake driver’s license. Also, make sure to report any scam that you have been a victim of to the FTC. They will provide you with excellent resources that will help you recover financially and emotionally.
