What to Do If You’re Locked Out of Your Google Account
How to Recover Your Username
- Go to the Google Sign-In Page
- Click “Need Help?” in the bottom right corner
- Instead of entering your email, click “Find My Account” in the bottom right corner
- Google will give you two options to choose from. You can either choose to recover your account with your phone number or another recovery email. You also need to enter the name on your account to confirm that it’s actually you.
- Google will send you a message on your phone or email containing your username.
How to Recover Your Password
- Go to the Google Sign-In Page
- Click “Need Help?” in the bottom right corner
- Enter your email and click “Next”
- Enter the last password you can remember and click “Next.” If you can’t remember any of your passwords, that’s ok. There are other options to recover your account. You can just click “Try a Different Question,” and it will give you other options to recover your account, including entering the month and year you created the account or sending a verification code to a recovery email address or phone number.
- If you have a recovery email address or phone number already on file, you will be sent a verification code. You will then enter the verification code to recover your email. If you don’t have a recovery email address or phone number on file, you will be asked to enter one in to retrieve this code. Once you enter the code, click “Next.”
- You will then be taken to a page where you can enter the new password that you want to use. Enter your new password into both fields then click “Change Password.”
How to Recover a Deleted or Hacked Google Account
On Google, they have an account recovery page for special instances where someone may have hijacked into your account. If this sounds like you, go to their account recovery page and answer any questions they ask you to the best of your ability.
You should only use the account recovery page if someone changed your recovery email or phone number, if someone changed your password, if someone deleted your account, or if you’re having issues signing in.
How to Avoid Getting Locked Out of Your Google Account
- Make sure you have a recovery email address and phone number attached to your Google account just in case something happens.
- Set up two-factor authentication to make it harder for a hacker to hack into your account.
- Set up multiple ways to log into your account including setting up a security key, downloading a Google Authentication app on your phone, or storing backup codes to your device.
- Set up multiple recovery email addresses and phone numbers so that way if you can’t get into one recovery method you can still get into another.
