58% of adults believe that calling out people on social media helps make them accountable for their actions. In today’s world, being called out online means having your career and reputation ruined in just one snap. Some manage to make a comeback, while other celebrities and famous personalities are completely canceled. Here are the top 4 celebrities that fell victim to cancel culture in 2021.
1. J.K. Rowling
Cancel culture has been one of the most talked-about topics over the past couple of years. With heated discussions happening everywhere from universities to politics and the workplace. Many people hope to make a more just society by imposing and enforcing social rules for how people should interact and communicate. However, we all value our personal freedom of speech. So the debate has become who can say what. In 2020 J.K Rowlings was put at the center of this debate.
Rowling faced a Twitter storm of backlash after making remarks that many people saw as transphobic. The controversy came after Rowling responded to a tweet regarding COVID-19 relief efforts.
The tweet called trans women “men in dresses.” Despite the fact that the controversy increased the sale of Harry Potter books, many Harry Potter fans were outraged by Rowling’s comments because trans people are 4 times more likely to be the victim of violent crimes, so critics see statements like these as creating attitudes that can lead to more violence against the transgender community.
Daniel Radcliffe spoke out against Rowling’s comments stating, saying:
"Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I."
The backlash from her 2020 Tweet carried over into 2021, with HBO having a Harry Potter reunion for the 20th Anniversary of The Philosopher Stone, and Rowling was not being in attendance.
2. Lea Michele
Lea Michele one of the stars in the hit Fox TV show Glee was also scrutinized by her fellow castmates after she tweeted about an African-American, George Floyd, who was killed by police officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis that sparked nationwide protests in 2020. Michele expressed how Floyd did not deserve what happened to him. Michele also pointed out that it wasn’t an isolated case and it should end. She then ended the tweet with #BlackLivesMatter.
However, Samantha Ware, her co-star on Glee and a woman of color, tweeted how Michele made her first TV experience a living hell. Even other co-stars shared the same sentiments. Following Ware’s viral post, Michele’s partnership with HelloFresh was terminated. Another company she worked with, Zola, expressed its disappointment toward Michele’s actions.
Michele apologized on her Instagram account, saying that her previous post was meant to support people of color. However, the negative responses of her fellow cast members made her reflect on her behavior. Many people have mixed feelings about Samantha Ware calling out Lea Michele at this moment. Lea Michele was a public figure who spoke out in support of George Floyd after the world saw him have his life taken by police. Many wonder if targeting someone for speaking in support of this cause would discourage others from being vocal in the future.
3. Gina Carano
Another Celebrity who became a huge topic in the cancel culture debate was one of the stars of the Star Wars series “The Mandalorian” and former mixed martial artist Gina Carano. On her Instagram account, she shared a photo from Nazi Germany during the holocaust and warned of the horrors of the holocaust becoming a reality for people with conservative viewpoints in America today. Because she was a cast member on one of the most popular shows of the year, the backlash she received reached all corners of the internet.
This comparison between the treatment of conservatives in America and the experiences of Jewish people during the holocaust outraged many people. Carano received a large amount of backlash for the post. Shortly after the post was made, angry Star Wars started tweeting #FireGinaCarano and got it trending on Twitter. In response to the outrage, Lucus studios, the creators of Star was pulled Carano from the shown calling her comments “Abhorrent”.
Gina’s Past tweets added fuel to the #FireGinaCarano trend. For instance, she publicly criticized people’s use of trans-friendly pronouns, and called one of her fans’ request to replace her pronoun as “harassment.” Afterward, Gina placed the words “beep/bop/boop.” in her bio, and it was seen as a mockery of non-binary people.

4. Lana Del Rey
This year, a popular singer. songwriter Lana Del Rey came under fire for the lyrics in many of her songs. She was accused of glamorizing domestic abuse and perpetuating negative gender roles in her songs. In response to this criticism, Lana called out many of the most popular female artists of our time and criticism:
“Now that Doja Cat, Ariana, Camila, Cardi B, Kehlani and Nicki Minaj and Beyonce have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f---ing, cheating etc – can I please go back to singing about being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect, or dancing for money- or whatever I want- without being crucified or saying that I’m glamorising abuse??????”
The outrage that came from these comments was due to the fact that many of the women Lana listed in the post were women of color. Lana Del Ray has been a controversial figure since the beginning of her career. Her messages and music have always been seen to go against the current standard of socially acceptable portrayals of femininity that has taken hold in recent decades. But yet, Lana still has many fans, admirers, and supporters who feel that her music speaks to who they are as women. These opposite viewpoints often put Lana at the center of debates over what music female creators should make.
