In this week’s video, we talked to a woman named Lisa who fell in love with a man only to find out shortly after that he was a romance scammer living in Nigeria. Lisa is a very compassionate woman, so when she heard about the terrible conditions that the young man behind the scam was forced to live under, she forgave him, and the relationship shifted from a romantic one to a maternal one.
The scammer’s real name was Chris, and he was a 19-year-old high school graduate in Nigeria who was struggling economically. Because of the poverty in his country, Chris was severely limited in what he could do after school, so he turned to do what so many young men in his country do, emotionally seducing women on the internet for their money.
Once Lisa found out she was being scammed, she forgave him, and as mentioned in last week’s post, she started unmasking more and more romance scammers and getting them to show her their true identities. Many of the scammers would describe to Lisa exactly how they stole the images, and why they turned to online scamming in the first place.
Lisa saw many of these romance scammers as kids just trying to make a living to survive the poverty that they were born into. One by one they all started calling her mom and staying in close communication with her.
Lisa felt like she got pretty good at spotting romance scams. She could tell pretty quickly whether or not someone she met online was really just a kid like one of the ones she was helping. But that all changed when she met two men online.
She started talking to both of them, and the situation got more confusing when the two men she was talking to turned on each other and started telling Lisa to block the other one. They insisted that the other was just a scammer trying to get Lisa’s money. She didn’t know who to believe, so she turned to social catfish.
When we looked into Bent’s profile, it became obvious that the stories he told Lisa were all fabricated with the intention of deceiving her and getting her to send as much money as she could. It was unclear who the real person was, but what was clear was that the real person was not who Lisa was in contact with.
One of the mysterious and suspicious details of the case is, that we tracked Bent’s location, and it came back that he was in the same town near Nigeria that Chris was from… What a coincidence.
In the end, we were not able to find out who the man’s true identity was, but we can’t help but wonder…
