If you’re a gay man and have dove into the online dating world, then many of you have probably tried out the popular online dating app Grindr. It’s a place where you can meet a future partner or a one-night stand and get to know them before meeting up with them in real life. While Grindr may be a fun place to get to know new people, it is also a place where scammers and catfish like to lurk, where they perform Grindr scams. From stalking due to Grindr’s precise location sharing to scammers and catfish trying to take people’s money and taking advantage of people sexually, it has several dangers that users should be aware of before using Grindr. Here are some Grindr catfish stories that allow you to understand the dangers of Grindr.
Victims Lured by Catfish to Man’s House
Matthew Herrick was outside of his apartment when he saw someone come up to the door and ring the buzzer. He asked if Matthew was home, and Michael responded saying that he was. He then proceeded to ask Matthew if it was him on Grindr that invited him over to do explicit acts with him. Michael was shocked, confused even, as he was not the guy that invited him over. He hadn’t looked at his Grindr in over a week. That’s when the man proceeded to pull up the catfish’s Grindr profile with all of Michael’s Instagram photos on the account.
Since then, there have been many men coming to his door on a daily basis all expecting to “get lucky” each time they went to his apartment. Even though he reported the fake Grindr account, more fake accounts started to surface using his images. Not only did these accounts offer naughty services to their victims, but they also offered drugs and “rough explicit acts” as well. This would lead to a violent crowd showing up to his apartment, demanding that they get what they promised, or they would beat him up. The catfish also said that if Michael said no to them, that he actually meant yes.
He filed a lawsuit against Grindr for negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress, false advertising, and deceptive business practices for allowing people to use his images and impersonate him and for allowing stalkers to continue to threaten him. Grindr has not responded to him other than their automated responses that say that they’re looking into the accounts that he has reported.
He thinks that his ex is behind the manipulations since he was making fake accounts of him even before they broke up. He manipulates the location settings with location spoofing apps, making the fake profiles seem like they are at Matthew’s house or work, and then puts all of Matthew’s Instagram pictures on it. Even though the ex-boyfriend denies it, Matthew still believes he’s behind all of it.
Since these accounts have started impersonating Matthew, he has had 24 men come to his home and work wanting to do explicit acts with him and 700 men messaging him wanting to do things to him. He has claimed that his life has been a living hell, and just wants it to stop.
Irish Gay Men Are Warned About Grindr Scam
The scammer messages the victim, telling him all sorts of attractive sexy things to make him interested in the scammer. Once the scammer has him locked in, he then asks if he has an account on “LGID.” The victim will then ask what that is, where the scammer responds that he had been abused before by someone on Grindr and that the link they are sending them leads them to a website where they can verify their identity to them.
The victim clicks the link and it sends them to a legit-looking webpage, where it asks them to enter information about themselves. It then states that it requires a small payment to process their information and determine that they are real, stating that a portion of it will help LGBT Abuse Victims. Once the payment is processed, it is most likely that the card will keep getting charged due to getting blackmailed by the scammer.
How to Avoid Having Grindr Catfish Stories
- Don’t click on any links sent by people you don’t know.
- Report any suspicious activity on Grindr.
- Delete your profile if catfish keep impersonating it.
- Don’t give money to anyone you don’t know.
- Call the local authorities if stalkers continue to follow you.
