They tell their victims a sob story about how their spouse died and how they want a new companion to spend the rest of their lives with. This gains their victims’ trust to where they feel like they can be vulnerable around them and trust them with anything. That’s when the romance scammer starts asking their victims for money. The victims give them money, thinking they can trust the romance scammers, and the romance scammers block them once they drain their bank account.
The Military Romance Scammer
The romance scammer claims to be in the military overseas, looking for love as they message their victims wanting to get to know them more. They usually claim they are in the military so that they have an excuse not to video call or meet with their victims in person. The military romance scammers start to develop romantic relationships with their victims at a fast rate, making sure that their victims fall in love with them and gain their trust as fast as possible. Once the victim’s trust is gained, the military romance scammer starts asking her for money due to a military emergency. Once the victim gives them all their money, the romance scammer blocks them.
The Romance Scammer Who Supposedly Works Overseas
The romance scammer tells their victims that they work at an oil rig, a car export center, or another company that requires them to be overseas. They use this as an excuse so that they don’t have to meet with their victims in person. They reach out to their victims claiming to want to be in a romantic relationship with them, and they say all these nice and charming things to make their victims fall in love with them at a quick rate. The scammers then ask their victims for money after a few months of talking to them, and the victims comply thinking usually that the scammer is going through a work emergency. The scammer steals all of their victims’ money, then blocks them immediately afterwards.
Phishing Links Scams
Scammers send their victims phishing links to fake websites, claiming that you can see more of someone’s photos if you click the link. Once you click on the link, it directs you to a fake website where malware is installed on your device to steal your personal information off of it. Sometimes, there are even forms that pop-up on these sites that victims use to fill out their information to see these “supposed photos.” However, once they enter their information, they get their information stolen through identity theft instead without getting to see any pictures.
How to Avoid Christian Mingle Scams
- Don’t send any money to anyone that you meet online.
- Don’t give anyone or any website your personal information that you’re unfamiliar with.
- Always video chat or meet someone in-person before starting a romantic relationship with them.
- If they claim to be in the military or work overseas, that’s usually a red flag that they might be a romance scammer.
- Watch out for any grammatical errors from the person you are talking to.
