These roles consist of the people who find the victims online <a href=\"https:\/\/socialcatfish.com\/scamfish\/what-is-catfishing-online-dating\/\">with catfish profiles<\/a>, and the people who communicate with these victims as the <a href=\"https:\/\/socialcatfish.com\/scamfish\/what-is-catfishing-online-dating\/\">role of the catfished profile.<\/a> The boss usually gives his employees a script called the scammer\u2019s playbook in order to lure his victims in.<\/p>\n<p>Next, they go out and usually fool someone into being their <a href=\"https:\/\/socialcatfish.com\/scamfish\/money-laundering-scams-scam-victims-dont-know-they-are-a-money-mule\/\">money launder.<\/a> The money launder helps transfer the money from the victim into their account and then transfers it to the scammer\u2019s account, most of the time without even knowing it. As we get into the year 2017, 16,902 cases were reported with $87 <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/a-record-547-million-lost-to-romance-scams-in-2021\/\">million lost<\/a>. Then in 2018, it increased 22,264 cases with $145 million lost. In 2019, 25,113 cases were reported with $202 million lost. Finally <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/busting-a-romance-scam-thats-lasted-seven-years\/\">last year<\/a> in 2020, the record of the most cases and money lost due to romance scams broke with a whopping $304 million lost and 32,792 cases reported.<\/p>\n<p>Within just a four-year span, <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/romance-scam-millions-of-dollars-made-from-stolen-pictures-of-tristan-king\/\">romance scam cases increased by 21,557 cases and $229 million more dollars<\/a> were lost. California had 3,110 <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/who-is-marcel-andre-vautour-and-how-does-he-run-his-romance-scams\/\">romance scam<\/a> cases with $120,492,182 lost. Texas had 1,602 <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/one-of-the-most-used-faces-in-romance-scams\/\">romance scam<\/a> cases with $42,181,951 lost. Florida had 1,603 cases with $40,173,934 lost. Michigan had 572 cases with $28,616,190 lost. Finally, New York had 1,103 cases with $26,286,815 lost.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom 5 territories with the least amount of money lost were Guam, Virgin Islands, U.S. Minor Outlying Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Guam had 8 <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/love-in-the-time-of-scammers-a-nurse-practitioners-25000-online-romance-scam\/\">romance scam<\/a> cases with $88,175 lost. The Virgin Islands had 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/states-with-the-most-and-least-romance-scams\/\">romance scam<\/a> cases with $41,100 lost. Finally, Northern Mariana Islands had 0 <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/online-romance-turned-crypto-scam-a-cautionary-tale\/\">romance scam<\/a> cases with $0 lost.<\/p>\n<p>This just goes to show that even the United States territories have been hit hard with romance scams due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even though $500-$88,175 lost wasn&#8217;t as much as $120,492,182, it&#8217;s still a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.socialcatfish.cloud\/scamfish\/cartel-scams-phone-extortion-scam-threatens-people-and-businesses-out-of-money\/\">money lost between only a few people<\/a> in these territories.
