National Unfriend Day: How to Rid Your Friends List of Scammers

Social media is a big part of our lives. We use it to connect with friends, family members, and people we are interested in. But what if you found out that the account you were following was fake? National unfriend day has come around again to make sure your social media accounts are authentic! Here’s how to tell if an account is fake, so you can unfollow them for National Unfriend Day!

How To Spot a Fake Account

Fake social media accounts can be spotted by looking for some red flags. These are as follows:

  • Check out the bio: Fake accounts will often use generic or random words. If you see a bio saying something like “fashion” instead of using the person’s name, then this is a red flag that the account may be fake.
  • Check out their posts: Fake accounts often have random or generic photos to go along with generic posts. A valid personal account will feature personal items and not generic photographs.
  • Keep an eye on the number of followers: Watch out for accounts with an unusual amount of followers compared to the number of posts. Popular accounts will have a large follower base but also plenty of posts as well.
  • Check out their friends: A fake account will often follow the same set of people. This is because they are following these individuals to boost their following number.
  • If unsure, Google them: Social media scammers will often use the name of celebrities or popular accounts to try and give their fake account credibility. If you search for an individual’s username along with a celebrity, then this can help determine if they are real or not.
  • Check for phony reviews: If you spot an account that has only posted once or twice, then they could be using this platform to post fake reviews for other companies.
  • Look for account verification icons: A real account will either have a blue or a white checkmark that is located next to their username. If this feature is missing, then the account could be fake.

If, after doing all these steps, you are still unsure, then it’s best to unfollow the account. Be wary of any account that is offering freebies or money. This could be a scammer trying to get your personal information in order to steal from you. Also, be cautious of the links that they post, as these could lead to malware downloads.

Protect Yourself From Fake Accounts

National Unfriend Day is also a National Unfollow Day. This is a time to unfollow any fake accounts you may be following to remain protected. It’s a day that everyone should be aware of since it protects us against social media scammers and spammers.

Make sure you are setting boundaries by only following accounts that give value to your life and not scammers that could harm you. Every year on November 17th, National Unfriend Day is observed, so you can take the time to thoroughly examine your account and ensure that you’re following accounts that deserve your attention and time.

It is difficult to tell if an account is fake. Still, it’s also important to be able to tell if a person’s social media account is fake. Fake accounts can cause problems for your business and personal life. They can be used for anything from simple pranking to more sinister purposes, like identity theft or promotion of violence and hate speech.

It’s also good to keep these tips in mind when deciding if a person’s social media account is fake. When in doubt, unfollow the person and keep your personal information safe!
