How to Rebuild Broken Family Relationships

The first person that you maintain a relationship with is a member of your family, which makes things all the more painful if that relationship experiences any kind of strain or break. A relationship is a delicate dance between many fine lines and as the saying goes, “blood is thicker than water.” So what happens if that relationship is broken? Here are a few tips to take that dance back out on the dancefloor and rebuild broken family relationships.

Reach Out to Repair Broken Family Relationships

Communication is the heart of any relationship, no matter who it involves. A lot of the time, a lack of communication is what builds barriers between people and created broken relationships. In order to rebuild any kind of trust, you have to be willing to open up and talk, even if it’s something that may be hard to discuss.

No one will know how to fix what hurts until you say that something is wrong. Reach out, even if you’re the only one willing to do it. Nothing will ever be solved until you take the first step.

If you can’t find a family member try running a search. You’ll be surprised how easy it is to locate lost loved ones with technology these days.

Apologize

Sometimes we don’t know if our actions have hurt another person or how deeply they have hurt that person. If you have been able to reach out and reopen that communication, act with love and apologize if you are in the wrong. Even if you aren’t in the wrong, apologize.

The worst an apology will do is make things better and let the other person know that you are seeking to atone.

Forgive

It can take a lot or a little to break someone’s trust. If your trust has been broken, you need to let that person know what happened and you need to be able to forgive them. Forgiveness is the only true way to move on and continue any kind of successful relationship.

This can be one of the hardest things to do, but it can also be the most rewarding. Holding onto grudges only affects the grudge-holder.

Be Patient When Dealing With Broken Family Relationships

Any relationship worth having will take time and energy. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Be willing to put effort and love into your relationship and you will be able to reap the benefits. If you have taken the time to communicate, apologize, and forgive but you don’t hear anything right away, take a step back.

Perhaps the other person needs a little bit of time. Relax. As long as both parties are willing to rebuild, every step taken forward will be for the best.

In Summary

Remember, relationships are a two-way street. No one will go anywhere if only one person puts in the effort. If you are seeking consolation with someone who doesn’t truly want it, take a breath and a break. When that person is ready, they will come to you.

If not, perhaps you’re better off without that relationship. Even if it hurts at first, the best thing you can do for situations of abuse is to break the cycle.

If you take these steps, you’ll be off on your way to repairing the most important relationships you have with the most important people in your life. Reach out, apologize, forgive, and be patient, and before you know it you’ll be dancing through life once again.
