What Happened?
Mary Beth’s sextortion story began with her marriage ending after 23 years. Her former husband was having an affair behind her back and wasn’t able to admit it to her. She ended up growing apart form him. She was able to fight the loneliness of his absence until her dog died. That’s when she ended up dating online through Facebook. She met Alex who she ended up falling for.
Alex revealed to her that he had made a killing through investing in crypto. He encouraged her to invest through the website that he had used. If you’re a loyal reader of the Social Catfish blog, then you know this is a HUGE mistake. Scammers use this tactic to gain access to your personal information when you put it in. She initially invested $2,000. When Mary Beth saw the money grow, she decided to invest $20,000 more.
She grew suspicious when she saw the money being wired from her account to a man named Jose in Mexico instead of to a bank. When she tried to withdrawal the money from her account, she couldn’t. Alex got mad when she tried to do this and told her she needed to invest more money. Mary Beth concocted a story saying that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and couldn’t invest anymore.
Things got weird when Alex sent a dick pic to her and asked her to send a photo of herself. Mary Beth sent a photo of her face not knowing that he wanted a pic of her nude so he could use it in his sextortion attempt. She eventually did send him the nude photos that he wanted. Soon after, he threatened her that if she doesn’t invest more money, he was going to send the nude photos to all her friends on Facebook.
She ended up deleting her account and out of fear of being embarrassed, she told her family and her friends about it. After running a reverse image search, they found the real identity of the man in the photo was a guy named Kevin.
