At Social Catfish, we interviewed a Nigerian scammer about his life in Nigeria and the reasons why he became a romance scammer. A couple of weeks ago, we received an email from him claiming that he had some valuable information about romance scams. He told us he’s watched a lot of our videos but it’s time we hear from the scammer’s side. He told us to gather our questions and that he was willing to interview with us. He let us know just how corrupt the Nigerian government is and how there are no jobs that would pay him enough to eat for the day. The only way that most Nigerians know how to live is through scamming. Since it only costs $2 to eat for the day in Nigeria, if someone could get $1,000 from an American, that’s enough to live for up to two years. There are some Nigerians that don’t like scamming but do it anyway since they have no other way to live. We also get a view of what a town in Nigeria is like. In this article and video, we will call the romance scammer Marvelous.
Watch the video below and keep scrolling to learn more about the day in the life of a scammer:
Why Did Marvelous Become a Romance Scammer?
There are some people that like to brag about scamming. However, Marvelous personally does not like to talk about it. He does it to survive and doesn’t want to brag about it with other people.
Scamming is not his passion, he just scams to survive. The most that he’s ever gotten from a victim is $8,000. As soon as he gets money from his clients (victims), he gets rid of them. He doesn’t see the point of talking to them if the money isn’t consistently coming.
How Bad is the Economy of Nigeria?
The main problem that a lot of scammers have is there are no legal jobs or employment available to make a living in Nigeria. Even if they got a job at a gas station or as a barber, it would only be 15,000 Naira ($36.50 US dollars) a month to live when eating for the day in Nigeria costs 1,000 Naira ($2 US dollars). It also costs 500 Naira ($1.22 US dollars) for transportation.
If someone were to become a barber in Nigeria, they would only earn 500 Naira per haircut, which is under $1 US dollar per haircut. This would mean that in order to eat for a day, that person would need to cut at least three people’s hair. This doesn’t even include the other expenses that this person would have to pay for.
Most people plan on getting out of scamming. There are some people that only stay in it for a period of time to make money and plan on getting out. There are also some people who do it for a lifetime due to greediness. People have a way of turning each scam into a lot of money out of greed.
The Town of Nigeria
Marvelous lives in a small town in Nigeria. He claims that it is usually noisy as he walks through the town. You are able to see small shops all throughout the town as people sit by their storefronts ready to sell things.
There are many supermarkets that are guarded by a fence due to the amount of crime within the town. There is also an unfinished gas station in his town, since the citizens of Nigeria are responsible for their own construction within the town.
There is no proper drainage within this town in Nigeria. In the above photo, you can see the amount of litter and sewage that is visible throughout the town. This is because of the government’s negligence that they have for their country.
Usually, it is the government’s responsibility to take care of the sewage and litter across their country. However, as you can see the government does not care about where its citizens live. They also don’t educate their citizens about the impact cleanliness has on their environment, so many citizens in Nigeria don’t know the impact their litter is having on their well-being.
This is the school in this town of Nigeria which is also located next to a church. Both the school and the church are secure with fencing and barbed wire since this town in Nigeria is unsafe.
There is constant construction going on in this town of Nigeria by the people. Marvelous states that the government doesn’t care about you and therefore barely enters the town you reside in unless it’s for election day.
Therefore, it’s up to the people to maintain the town. They might claim to be religious, but the government preaches yet doesn’t act on it. It’s more of “do as the government says” before it’s “do as God says.”
What Are Marvelous’ Goals For the Future?
He doesn’t want to stay in Nigeria or Africa for the rest of his life. If he could move anywhere in the world, he would move to the United States. He tries to stay educated by purchasing books online to maintain his knowledge. He also learned computer programming and has a certificate. If he could stop scamming and do computer programming full time, he would do it. He would also help his victims and pay them the money back if he could.
Social Catfish offered to have Marvelous work for us full time in order to help pay back his victim. A portion of his paycheck would go back to the victims he scammed and he would start making a living in the right way. He is going to learn PHP work and more dev work to get started. He is the only scammer we have interviewed that hasn’t asked for money for the interview and we appreciate that he wants to turn his life around.
