Why Do People Cheat in Relationships?: What To Do if You’ve Been Cheated On

It’s a question as old as time: Why do people cheat? Perhaps you’ve been cheated on by a partner or are the one who cheats in your own relationship. You may have caught your loved one acting suspiciously or found out that your love having cybersex with another person online! Whether you’re suspicious that your loved one has been cheating on you, have confirmation, or just want to figure out the reason behind your own cheating … this is everything you need to know about why do people cheat in relationships on the person they claim to love most.

What is Considered Cheating?

Cheating has many interpretations that are unique to the people in the relationship. The standard most accepted definition is that cheating is being sexually or emotionally unfaithful to your romantic relationship. People in monogamous relationships may consider cheating to be kissing someone else, consistently flirting with others, trading sexy selfies, having online love affairs, or crossing a pre-established boundary that has been set. Those who are in polyamorous or “open” relationships may consider cheating to be not following any agreed-upon rules about the other people they can see or be intimate with. Either way, cheating usually involves some level of deceit and can have emotionally devastating consequences for anyone. So why do people cheat in relationships? Let’s find out.

Why Do People Cheat in Relationships?

Just how many people cheat? According to a report by the Institute for Family Studies, 20% of men and 13% of women cheat on their spouses, with 18% of those people being Democrats and 14% Republicans. While one might think that cheating happens with regularity, 18% of people cheat once a year or less, and 14% cheat once a week or several times a month/year.

Opportunity

Not everyone who cheats has the behavior included in their master plan or front and center on their bucket list. A common scenario is when a cheater goes out for drinks with friends and happens to run into a hot guy or girl who puts the moves on them or vice versa. Whether influenced by attraction, alcohol, or because they’re having problems in their primary relationship … opportunistic cheaters may regret their actions, chalk it up to a wild night on the town, or carry on as though their cheating never happened.

Other opportunistic cheaters are more habitual in their methods and cheat whenever a good-looking person consents to their charms. Often considered “players,” the opportunistic cheater usually lies to their partner and pretends that they’re monogamous … when they aren’t!

Boredom

A cheater who cheats out of boredom is not the same as saying that the person they are dating or married to is boring. The reality is that not everyone is meant to be in a relationship. Some people commit to a partner when they’re still at an age when they really want to sew their wild oats or aren’t content within themselves. Other people marry or commit to someone they love deeply, but then find out that they aren’t sexually or emotionally compatible.

The “bored” cheater wants to experience someone new and uses sex as a way to do that. Don’t let someone who cheats on you make you feel like it was your fault. Whatever you did or didn’t do, they should have been honest about their desires or dealt with your relationship issues.

Hypersexuality

Have you ever dated someone who just couldn’t get enough of you? While being in love with someone who strongly desires you is a good thing, some people have mental health issues that cause them to act out sexually. Often part of bipolar disorder, if you are in a relationship with a hypersexual person, you might notice that their sexual appetite has no bounds. This type of cheater may go to massage parlors, visit prostitutes or cheat … even though they claim to love you. Hypersexual cheaters can be helped by therapy, doctor-prescribed medication, or groups like Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) … however you may not want to wait around for them and prefer to find someone more loyal.

Online Cheaters

In-person, your loved one is honest and trustworthy. Online, they’re sexting whomever they can or hooking up with webcam stars. Or, maybe their relationship with you is also online and you find out that they have others that they are also online “dating” or forming relationships with. Even if your relationships began online, the pain you experience from being cheated on is just as palpable and painful.

They Want to Leave

Okay, so they may not actually want to leave you. However, when relationships woes begin, many people want to escape the pain of the problem. This type of cheater might even think that you’re going to leave them and want to have a backup guy or girl waiting, as they fear being left alone. What better way to take their mind off the struggles of fixing the relationship they’re in than to cheat and find someone to date next. These types of cheaters typically fear intimacy and feel like having someone to fall back on is the only way they’ll feel emotionally safe.

What to Do if You’re Cheated On

If you’re cheated on, the only way through the pain is to accept that you cannot turn back the clock. What’s done is done and it’s natural to feel awful, mad, and hurt. However, on the flip side of the coin, some people find out they’re being cheated on and feel liberated. No longer do they have to dedicate themselves to someone who doesn’t have their back. They can leave their crummy relationship and pursue that sexy person at the gym and a happier, better future.

However, if you’re not jumping for joy then it means that you love your partner and the thought of them being with someone (anyone!) else is heartbreaking. If you want to get your self-worth back, focus on what you can do and decide what you’re willing to tolerate.
