Is OkCupid safe? (Here’s what you need to know)

If you’re looking for a fun way to widen your social circle or build a long-term relationship with someone of the same wavelength, you might want to use OkCupid. It’s one of the most popular dating apps worldwide.

Whether you’re just about to use the app, or you’ve already found some matches, you might be thinking, “Is OkCupid safe?” Yes, it is — but only if it’s approached the right way. Find out more about OkCupid and how it could be safe or not below.

What Is OkCupid and Is It Safe?

Established in 2004, OkCupid is considered one of the best free dating sites. It has a robust set of features and unlike most dating sites, it includes 12 gender identities and over 20 sexual orientations. It’s literally a dating site for everyone.

OkCupid lets you find matches through compatibility scores. The app provides over 3,000 questions that you can answer to help determine compatibility with your matches. although apps Bumble also has questions you can answer, features like these set it apart from other apps. But when trying a new app that is less popular than Tinder or Bumble may leave you with the question“Is OkCupid safe?” If you proceed with caution, then the answer is yes.

However,  fake profiles on this app are rampant, especially since the app gives you the option to use an email instead of a phone number when signing up. There are also instances of catfishing, where people use fake images and even fake identities, build an intimate relationship with you and then ask you for money. This is known as a romance scam. Romance scams have been on the rise over the past couple of years.

Although the app is largely safe when it comes to meeting up with a stranger you met online it is important to be cautious. Some people have had terrible meetups with people they met on the app. In fact, In 2014, Okcupid admittedly created “mismatches” on the app to purposely create bad dates. The company said it was part of an “experiment” to see how people would behave. If this makes you distrust the company and even a little skeptical about using the app, we don’t blame you.

Cases like these can be scary, especially if you don’t know much about the person you plan on meeting. That is why you should be careful when meeting your online dates in person, like going to a public place instead and telling your family or friends about the meetup.
